Local Lore
Cold Smoke Phenomenon
Bozeman is known for its dry, bottomless snowfalls that produce a weightless powder spray known as “Cold Smoke.” At Bridger Bowl and Big Sky, the moisture content is so minuscule (3-4% water content, sometimes less) and the snow accumulations are so deep, that the snow literally has the consistency of smoke as it pours over your shoulders.
Mountain Etiquette
Mind Your Ps and Qs
Skiers of all abilities—from “Jerrys” to “Rippers”—everyone has a better and safer day on the slopes when they remember these basic rules of the mountain.
- The Golden Rule: People downhill always have the right of way.
- Look uphill and yield to others whenever starting downhill or merging onto a trail.
- Maintain safe distances, especially when passing others. Announce yourself in close quarters.
- Stop Safe: stopping distance depends on your ability, terrain difficulty, speed, conditions, and how busy the trail is.
- Be considerate in lift lines. Try your best not to touch your equipment with others.
- Respect the rules: it’s your responsibility to understand and follow all signage, rules and trail boundaries.
