Best Family Activities in Bozeman This Summer

Summer in southwest Montana is built for family adventures.

One of the biggest advantages of staying in Bozeman is how many different experiences are within a short drive. You can spend the morning hiking to a waterfall, cool off at a splash park in the afternoon, and be watching bull riding under the lights that evening.

Whether you’re visiting on your way to Yellowstone or planning a longer Montana vacation, here are some of our favorite family-friendly activities for summer.

Spend a Day Exploring Yellowstone National Park

For many families, Yellowstone is the reason for the trip.

The North Entrance near Gardiner is about 90 minutes from Field & Stream Lodge and makes an easy day trip. Along the way, you’ll drive through Paradise Valley before entering one of the most famous national parks in the world.

For families with younger children, focus on a few key stops rather than trying to see everything:

Bison sightings are common, and spotting wildlife often becomes the highlight of the day.

Local Tip: Leave early. Wildlife is most active in the morning, and you’ll avoid the busiest traffic entering the park.

Cool Off in Hyalite Canyon

When temperatures climb, locals head south to Hyalite Canyon.

Located about 30 minutes from the lodge, Hyalite offers cooler mountain air, lakes, waterfalls, and plenty of room for kids to explore.

Palisade Falls is one of the easiest family-friendly walks in the area. The paved trail is short enough for younger children while still delivering a rewarding waterfall view at the end.

Families often turn the trip into a full day by packing lunch and spending time around Hyalite Reservoir afterward.

Local Tip: Weekday mornings are typically quieter than weekends during peak summer.

Experience a Real Montana Rodeo

You don’t need to travel far to experience one of Montana’s most iconic traditions.

Summer rodeo season is packed with opportunities to watch bull riding, barrel racing, bronc riding, and team roping.

A few events worth watching for include:

  • Bozeman Stampede: Typically held in early August, the Bozeman Stampede is one of the region’s signature rodeo events and attracts competitors from across the West.
  • Gallatin County Fair: Held in July, the Big Sky Country State Fair combines rodeo events, carnival rides, food vendors, and live entertainment, making it one of the best family events of the summer.
  • Big Sky PBR: Located about an hour south, Big Sky’s professional bull riding events offer a different experience against the backdrop of the Madison Range.

Local Tip: Purchase tickets early for major rodeo weekends as many events sell out.

Walk Downtown and Grab Ice Cream

Not every family activity needs to be an all-day adventure.

Downtown offers an easy afternoon of browsing local shops, picking up outdoor gear, and grabbing a snack before heading back to the lodge. Sample a locally made treat at Genuine Ice Cream, where flavors are inspired by the Montana lifestyle and scenery.

Main Street is especially lively during summer, with community events, outdoor dining, and local businesses that make it easy to spend a few hours exploring.

Families often pair downtown time with a stop at Peets Hill for views across the Gallatin Valley.

Hike a Trail the Whole Family Can Enjoy

One of the best things about the area is that you don’t have to be an experienced hiker to enjoy the outdoors.

A few family-friendly options include:

  • Sourdough Canyon: Wide trails, gradual elevation gain, and shaded sections make Sourdough Canyon one of the easiest hikes for families.
  • Peets Hill: More of a walk than a hike, Peets Hill offers great views without requiring a major commitment.
  • Palisade Falls: A short paved trail leads to one of the area’s most impressive waterfalls, Palisade Falls is ideal for younger children.

Most trailheads are within 10–30 minutes of Field & Stream Lodge.

Join the Ridge Run

Families visiting in August should keep an eye on the annual Ridge Run.

This long-running local event brings runners and spectators together for one of the area’s most recognizable outdoor traditions. Even if you’re not participating, the event creates a fun atmosphere and offers a chance to experience the community side of southwest Montana.

Make the Most of Long Summer Evenings

One of the best parts of visiting during summer is how much daylight you have.

Rather than trying to squeeze everything into one day, slow down a little.

Spend the morning outdoors, take a break during the warmest part of the afternoon, then head back out for dinner, a local event, or a sunset walk.

Montana’s long summer evenings make it easy to fit more into the trip without feeling rushed.

Stay Somewhere Built for Families

After a full day exploring, having the right place to come back to matters.

Field & Stream Lodge offers room options that work for families of all sizes. The Queen-Queen is ideal for smaller families, while the custom Bunk Room remains one of the most popular options for kids. Larger groups can spread out in connecting configurations like The Angler and The Camper, which sleep up to eight and ten guests respectively.

With an indoor pool, hot tub, Dry Fly Saloon, The Honey Hole, and easy access to Yellowstone, Hyalite, and downtown, the lodge makes it easy to build a family trip without spending half your vacation in the car.

Plan Your Montana Family Adventure

The best family vacations don’t try to do everything.

Pick a few memorable experiences, leave room for spontaneity, and spend your time exploring what makes southwest Montana special.

From Yellowstone wildlife and waterfall hikes to rodeos and summer events, there’s plenty here to keep every age entertained, and Field & Stream Lodge puts it all within easy reach.
